Physicians may dispense medications in-office to their patients in Alabama under their state medical licenses. No dispensing permit is required for non-controlled legend drugs, but a permit is required for controlled substances (pursuant to Board of Medical Examiners Rule 540-X-4-.05). Physicians who dispense controlled substances must report to the Alabama Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP). More information about Alabama dispensing regulations is available here, and the dispensing physician registration form is available here. Each location where medications are dispensed must be registered separately.
Mid-level dispensing rules vary from state to state. Alabama regulations do not specify whether Physician Assistants (PAs) and Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNPs) may dispense non-controlled legend drugs.
